Finding Stability, Purpose, and a Voice: Henrietta’s Story

I currently work as the Community Engagement and Volunteer Coordinator at Interfaith Works, and I’m a proud mother of three beautiful children—ages 18, 6, and 5. My journey with CareerCatchers began during one of the hardest times in my life.

At the height of the COVID pandemic, my family became homeless. We were living out of hotels, moving from one place to another. It was something I had never experienced before. Since the age of 12, I had always held a job. Not being able to work and provide for my children was deeply frustrating.

This time around, looking for a job came with extra challenges. I had trouble finding someone I could trust to watch my kids during interviews. I lacked professional clothing. And even when I did make it to interviews, getting employers to respond afterward was a constant struggle.

Thankfully, my case manager saw what I was going through and connected me with William, a career coach at CareerCatchers. I was truly blessed to meet him.

Will did far more than help me find a job—he gave me space to vent, which I really needed. He didn’t just ask about my résumé; he asked me, “What career path are you going into?” At first, I was frustrated—how could I even think about a career path when I was homeless? But he helped me see beyond that moment.

He acknowledged my faith, which means everything to me, and said something that stuck with me: “Maybe this is a time God is trying to reinvent you, reevaluate you, and really push you into something you’re meant to do.”

That hit home.

We started talking about my true passions, and I realized I’ve always had a connection with adolescents. I love psychology. I love helping people. I told him I wanted to become a life coach.

I was a little discouraged—I didn’t have a formal educational background—but William believed in me. He introduced me to Udemy, where I signed up for a psychology course. He also helped me set goals. It made such a difference to sit down with someone patient—someone who listened deeply, not like I was

just another client to check off a list. He followed through, encouraged me, and kept reminding me of my potential.

He also told me that Interfaith Works, a nonprofit serving people experiencing homelessness and poverty in Montgomery County, was hiring. I applied, interviewed, and within a few days, they offered me the job. What I loved about CareerCatchers is that after I got the job, they didn’t just leave me there. Usually when you go through programs, you never hear from them again—but not with Will. He stayed in touch with me for at least a year, always checking in and asking, “What’s the goal from here? How are we going to get there?” That continued support meant everything.

This November, I’ll be celebrating five years with Interfaith. I started as a Program Support Staff member. Later, my director nominated me as the DEI and Safe Space Ambassador. I noticed we didn’t have a Shift Supervisor role like other shelters, so I suggested it—and ended up stepping into that role too. Eventually, someone told me about the Community Engagement and Volunteer Coordinator position. I applied and got it. I absolutely love my job.

God has blessed me—with a beautiful townhouse, a three-bedroom home with a garage, and a car. My family is stable again.

CareerCatchers doesn’t just help you get a job—they mentor you, guide you, and prepare you mentally. If every coach works the way William did, then this program is truly amazing. Thank you, thank you.
