From Surviving to Thriving: One Client’s Journey Toward a New Future

For many years, life felt like a series of obstacles for Ms. C. Becoming a mother at a young age and facing difficult circumstances early in life made it hard for her to finish high school. Like many parents trying to provide for their children, she focused on working and meeting daily needs rather than pursuing long-term goals.

Now in her early thirties, with a school-age daughter who looks up to her, she has begun to see a new path for herself, one that moves beyond simply working a job and toward building a meaningful career. With the support of her Career Counselor Maria , she began to reflect on her goals and the future she wants to create for her family. Maria also worked with Ms. C’s case manager to discuss the training she needed and to support her in obtaining her GED. Together, they developed a step-by-step action plan focused on education, career development, and long-term stability.

The first step was returning to school to earn her GED. She enrolled in GED preparation classes at Montgomery College, marking an important milestone in her journey. Her commitment has already produced meaningful progress. In December 2025, she successfully completed the first phase of her GED preparation classes. She continued building momentum by beginning the second phase of the program in January 2026.

Today, she is focused not only on completing her GED, but also on what comes next. Her long-term goal is to become a Peer Recovery Specialist, a role that will allow her to support others who may be facing challenges similar to those she has overcome. She also plans to enroll in community college in the near future to further develop the skills needed for this career path.

Perhaps her greatest motivation is her daughter. She is determined to show her child that setbacks do not define a person’s future and that education and perseverance can open new doors. Her story is a powerful reminder that when individuals are given the right support, encouragement, and opportunities, they can transform their lives—not only for themselves, but for the next generation.

Through determination, guidance, and a clear plan, she is moving from surviving day to day to building a future filled with purpose, stability, and hope.
