BE CAREFUL: Scams?  With the increased use of the internet for job applications and online training, scammers are reaching out and offering seemingly legitimate opportunities. Did you know scammers advertise jobs like employers to steal money and personal information? Would you know if a job posting was legitimate or a scam? Regardless of which side you’re on, check out examples of different job scams to help make you aware and familiar. You can also jot down these tips on avoiding job scams to help get you started: Do an online search and look up the name of the company or the person who’s hiring you. Talk to someone you trust, especially if you’re unsure if a posting is legitimate. When in doubt reach out to your CareerCatchers career coach and ask for help. DO NOT SEND personal information until you verify who you are sending it to. Don’t pay for the promise of a job. 

Never give them your information until you check a few things:

Do an online search to make sure the company is legitimate.

Go to other websites to search for the company for reviews and other details.

Never bank on a “cleared” check. Watch out for employers asking you to add money to an amount they send or cover the balance of a check they send.

Cyber Security Tips

How to protect your information online:

Use a VPN, especially while connected to public WiFi

Never share your passwords

Don’t click on any suspicious looking links, especially if sent from someone you’re not familiar with

Sign out of your accounts while not using them

Change your passwords frequently

Use two-factor authorization

Create long passwords with capital letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols

The theft of checks from home mailboxes and US Postal Service blue mailboxes has spiked across the country, and the D.C. region has become a new hot spot. Criminals are stealing mail to obtain checks and personal identifying information to commit bank fraud, mail fraud, wire fraud and identity theft. Montgomery County’s Office of Consumer Protection advises that the safest way to send checks is to physically bring them to the Post Office and mail them inside, or to pay bills online. If you have experienced mail theft, telephone or internet fraud, or other scams, please contact (240) 777-3636 or consumerprotection@montgomerycountymd.gov

The Bernie Scholarship Awards Program was established in 1995 to help graduating high school seniors and other adults who live in subsidized housing in Montgomery County, Maryland achieve their dreams. Access to Wholistic and Productive Living Inc., (AWPLI) is a health and social justice 501(C)3 non-profit organization headquartered in Prince George’s County Maryland since 2007. provides a variety of community health services nationwide. Access to Wholistic and Productive Living Inc., in partnership with Net. Housing Initiative Partnership – Tenant Information Sessions

During 2025, HIP is partnering with the Montgomery County Dept of Housing & Community Affairs (DHCA) to offer free, virtual and in-person Renter Information Sessions twice a month on Tuesdays at 7PM – 8PM (March 11th and March 25th). birdSEED’s housing justice program offers down payment grants to qualifying BIPOC first-time home-buying residents in the DC & Philadelphia areas.  Awards range from $5,000 to $15,000, and grants are made multiple times per year until funds are expended. Health and Dental Insurance (Low-Cost)

Since 2004, Montgomery County has been partnering with the National Association of Counties (NACo) to provide FREE prescription discount cards and residents have saved more than $32 million since the Montgomery RX program began.

They have now joined NACo’s Live Healthy program. The Live Healthy program continues to provide FREE prescription discount cards and has added a low-fee Dental Discount program that provides discounts on check-ups, cleanings, fillings, crowns, root canals and more.  The low-fee Health Discount program provides discounts on vision services, hearing aids and screenings, diabetes supplies and more. Recreational Pass Assistance Available to County Residents Adults and Children

Rec Assist is provided by Montgomery County Recreation to make financial assistance available to County residents who receive public assistance. The Rec Assist Fund subsidizes Recreation activity and membership fees so that eligible residents can pay reduced fees for these Recreation services. For more information or to apply, click here.

In 2015, HOC launched Housing Path, an online wait list portal for affordable rental housing programs. Housing Path allows people to apply online and manage or update their applications at anytime. The online application walks people through a simple step-by-step process and takes about 30 minutes to complete. HOC Housing Path is currently available in two languages: English and Spanish. Financial Assistance for Citizenship Application Fees Offered by CASA

CASA, in partnership with Montgomery County, is offering financial assistance to those who are eligible to apply for citizenship but cannot afford  the application fee. Residents of Montgomery County who earn less than 300% of the federal poverty guideline may qualify for a scholarship of $150 or $300 to help pay the application filing fee. Interested applicants should call (240) 560-2272 for more information. Flyers are available in English and Spanish. Note: Low-income individuals seeking to apply for citizenship may also be eligible for a fee waiver or reduced fee through USCIS.

$29 Virtual Primary Care Visits Through Costco Memberships

Costco is now offering members online health checkups for as low as $29. The retailer is offering the new service in partnership with Sesame, a direct-to-consumer health care marketplace that connects medical providers nationwide with consumers. Sesame, in a release, said Costco members beginning Monday can book health care visits directly through their memberships in all 50 states. Free Meals and Nutrition Services for Seniors

BE CAREFUL: Scams?  With the increased use of the internet for job applications and online training, scammers are reaching out and offering seemingly legitimate opportunities. Did you know scammers advertise jobs like employers to steal money and personal information? Would you know if a job posting was legitimate or a scam? Regardless of which side you’re on, check out examples of different job scams to help make you aware and familiar. You can also jot down these tips on avoiding job scams to help get you started: Do an online search and look up the name of the company or the person who’s hiring you. Talk to someone you trust, especially if you’re unsure if a posting is legitimate. When in doubt reach out to your CareerCatchers career coach and ask for help. DO NOT SEND personal information until you verify who you are sending it to. Don’t pay for the promise of a job. 

Never give them your information until you check a few things:

Do an online search to make sure the company is legitimate.

Go to other websites to search for the company for reviews and other details.

Never bank on a “cleared” check. Watch out for employers asking you to add money to an amount they send or cover the balance of a check they send.

How to protect your information online:

Use a VPN, especially while connected to public WiFi

Never share your passwords

Don’t click on any suspicious looking links, especially if sent from someone you’re not familiar with

Sign out of your accounts while not using them

Change your passwords frequently

Use two-factor authorization

Create long passwords with capital letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols

The theft of checks from home mailboxes and US Postal Service blue mailboxes has spiked across the country, and the D.C. region has become a new hot spot. Criminals are stealing mail to obtain checks and personal identifying information to commit bank fraud, mail fraud, wire fraud and identity theft.
